High School Students Create Senior CD with Video and Photo Highlights

Dan Hoffman, the computer teacher at South High School in Willoughby, Ohio, is passionate about helping students gain an understanding of computers. Though his classes are rigorous, students know that they will be well-armed with the computer skills needed to succeed in college and the work place.

With digital media becoming more prevalent at home and in the work place, Dan felt that he needed to incorporate video editing into his advanced computer course. He opted for VideoStudio, Ulead’s video editing software, because it offered the same technology found in professional video editing programs, yet was easy and intuitive to learn. He was additionally impressed that VideoStudio could accept video, digital photos and images created in other software programs. This made it an ideal tool for his class, which learns how to create a variety of digital media content in different file formats.

After purchasing VideoStudio, Dan obtained a digital camera so that his class could take digital photos and video during and after school and on the weekends. The student editors can easily transfer the stills and video clips to the class computers. With VideoStudio, they then transform the content into fun presentations with transitions, effects, titles, filters, music and even narration.

Each year Dan facilitates the creation of a Senior CD, which includes photos and video highlights of the graduating class. Dan assigns his multimedia classes with the task of taking photos and videos throughout the school year. One student is in charge of organizing the media on the computer network in a chronological order. His students also choose the music to accompany the video and photos. Dan has a hands-off approach and let’s the students do 100 percent of the work. He does however organize the project and maintain strict deadlines, a necessity for a year-long project.

“VideoStudio’s features allow the student to experiment in producing a video of their own,” says Dan, who has used VideoStudio in his classroom for two years. He adds, “It’s extremely important for the students to take ownership of their video. In the end, they like VideoStudio because it’s not only easy to work with, but the final Senior CD looks professional.”

Like most teachers today, Dan has a great desire to implement this technology into all aspects of classroom learning. He can see the potential for classroom presentations, district presentations, and other after school events.
