Young videographers can regularly be caught on the Lansing High School campus diligently capturing footage of sports teams and players, or taking a poll of classmate opinions on hot topics.
Students take particular interest in their work as it will be seen by family, friends and teachers in a bi-weekly, 15-minute schools news cast. They also carefully arrange their productions for the potential that hundreds of strangers will see their work on the local cable channel. |
The Lansing High School students have learned a lot about what it takes to produce broadcast-quality video. In particular, they have been given hands on training on how to use Ulead’s professional level video editing and 3D animation software, Ulead MediaStudio Pro and Ulead COOL 3D.
The students use Video Editor, the video capture and editing module in Ulead MediaStudio Pro to begin capturing the footage from their camcorders. Once the footage is captured, they also use the Video Editor module to edit and add titles, audio, filters and effects to their productions. With COOL 3D, the students create 3D animated titles that they integrate into their video productions.
Weekly pre-show planning meetings are facilitated by Daniel Wessel, the primary computer teacher at Lansing High School. He decided to bring video editing software into his classroom as a way to reinforce the school’s mission to “provide students the opportunity to develop the scholastic, technical, social, and life-long learning skills essential for academic, occupational, and personal success as productive citizens.”
Daniel chose Ulead MediaStudio Pro over a competitor’s product because of the friendly user-interface. “Students can sit down with Ulead MediaStudio Pro and figure out many functions without a lot of hand holding,” says Daniel, who has been with the school district for seven years.
These high school producers have also produced videos for birthdays, graduations and anniversaries. For more information on Lansing High School’s scholastic programs, please visit its student run Web site at http://www.usd469.net/lhs/index.htm.
