Technical FAQs
Q:
Whenever I try to acquire an image I get an error message like: "Twain error" "Error getting next Twain data source" "Unable to find the Twain source manager" "Please copy the TWAIN.DLL file from your source disk to your Windows folder." Why?
A:

It could be caused by any of the following:

  • Scanner driver: Be sure that the scanner driver is properly set-up and configured.
  • TWAIN version: Be sure the scanner driver is the latest version which is compatible with the operating system you use. Please check this with the hardware vendor.
  • Select TWAIN source: Before hitting the Acquire button, select the TWAIN source in File: Acquire/Scanner/Digital Camera: Select Source.
  • Scanner Power: Be sure that the scanner power is turned on when you start up your computer
Q:
We received a copy of Ulead Photo Explorer as bundled software of the hardware device we bought. However, it didn't include a copy of the user's manual. How can I obtain a copy of the manual?
A:

The company you bought the equipment from chose not to purchase the manual from us to include in the bundle. We have included an on-line version using the Acrobat Reader that was installed with our software. You can find the .PDF in the Manuals or Documents folder on the CD. If you did not install the READER.EXE, please do so from the same directory before you double-click on the PDF file. There is also some on-line help anytime by pressing F1.

Q:
Where does Photo Explorer save the images I scan?
A:

It will save them to the current browser folder.

Q:
Photo Explorer always seems to save in JPG file format when I scan, why is this?
A:

Photo Explorer automatically saves the file after it is brought in from your scanner in the Acquire function, JPG is the default. You can change the file type that is used by selecting the File->TWAIN Acquire->File Setup and set your preferred file type there.

Q:
How can I scan a document and edit it later using word processing software?
A:

You need software that has OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capability to do this. Photo Explorer does not include OCR capability.

Q:
Why is it that some of the .EPS files that I have in my system won't open in Photo Explorer?
A:

Photo Explorer only supports uncompressed EPS files. It does not support JPEG-compressed EPS files.

Q:
Why is it that when I scan an image, it appears large on the screen but so small when printed?
A:

Scanning and printing resolutions can be very different from your VGA monitor resolution. Most VGA adapters display pictures on the screen at either 72 or 96 dpi. Most printers print at 360, 600 or 720 dpi, so there is anywhere from a 5 to 10 times difference in resolution between your printer and your screen. Lets say that you are looking at a 320 x 240 image on your screen at 72 dpi, making the image about 4.4" x 3.3". If you printed this on a 720 dpi printer, the image will be about 1/10 the size you saw on the screen. Likewise, if you scan at 300 dpi, your 4" x 5" photo will turn into a 16.6" x 20.8" on your monitor, much bigger than you can probably display on the screen.

Q:
Does Photo Explorer support 36-bit/48-bit image acquisition?
A:

Yes. However, some of the adjustment functions may not be able to operate with this type of file.
