Set Photo Explorer to give correct 35mm equivalent values for your camera
In many cases Photo Explorer knows about your camera and will give the correct conversion factor automatically. Unfortunately for some camera models (particularly for Sony Cybershot and Mavica models and some cameras from Sanyo) this is not possible and some manual setup is required.

To check if manual setup is needed:

  1. Select a photo from your camera in Photo Explorer's browser
  2. Select Photo Properties function from the File menu
  3. Look at the Zoom (Focal length) entry. If there is a * following the value then manual setup is required. For example:

    Zoom (Focal length): 45mm (equiv.)*

    If the * does not appear then Photo Explorer has recognized your camera and no further configuration is needed.
Manually configure Photo Explorer to convert to the correct 35mm equivalent To manually configure Photo Explorer to convert to the correct 35mm equivalent lens scale for your model of digital camera, follow these steps:
  1. Look up your camera on the table at the bottom of this page to find the conversion factor
  2. Open the File/Preferences menu of Photo Explorer
  3. Select the Camera and Exif group
  4. Insert the camera correction factor in the box provided
  5. If you only use this camera then uncheck the Auto detect conversion factor box
  6. Press OK
  7. The correct zoom values are listed in the File/Camera Properties and on printouts

The following list shows the camera make, 35mm equivalent zoom range followed by the conversion factor you need to use in Photo Explorer. Cameras shown in red cannot be recognized automatically by Photo Explorer.

What if your camera is not listed in the table?

If your camera is not listed then you may still be able to calculate the value. If you look on the front of your camera lens it will either quote the zoom range (e.g. 6.2-12.6mm) or the fixed zoom (e.g. 8mm). Take either the single value or the upper value of the zoom range. Then look on the camera's manual or on the manufacturer's Web site to see if the 35mm equivalent range is quoted. Again take the single or upper value. The conversion factor is the 35mm value divided by the value from the camera lens. For example:

Camera lens says: 6.3-12.6 mm

Manual says: 35-70 mm zoom

Conversion factor is: 70 divided by 12.6, about 5.55
