Creating lower thirds using the Component Designer


“Lower third” graphics are title bars found at the bottom of the screen. They are commonly used in news and sports programs as well as documentaries. The next time you watch TV, check out the lower thirds. You’ll find they’re everywhere. PhotoImpact’s Component Designer lets you easily create professional looking lower thirds. Simply select a template, modify the properties and then export them for use in Ulead VideoStudio.




  1. Open the Component Designer by selecting Web: Component Designer or by pressing [F12].

  2. Select Banner and then click a banner template to use. Change the banner attributes as you see fit.

    Tip: Resize the banner to 640 pixels wide for a perfect fit in DV projects.


  3. Click Export then select To Image Optimizer. Click and then select Transparency in the PNG Options tab. Click Save As.


    Tip: You can export banners to PhotoImpact for further editing before saving.


    After creating the lower third graphic, you can now use it as an overlay object in your video project.

  4. Open the video or image file where you want to place the lower third graphic and then switch to the Overlay Step.

    To load the lower third graphic into the Library, click . In the dialog box that opens, locate the PNG file and click Open.


  5. Drag the PNG file from the Library to the Overlay Track in the Timeline.

    Tip: To set the position of the clips, click the Attribute tab in the Options Panel.


  6. To view your video, switch to the Edit Step, click Project Mode and then click Play.
