Drawing realistic clouds

The shifting of clouds creates wondrous effects on landscaped and seascapes. Photographers use various techniques such as prolonging exposure to catch the dynamic effect of cloud movement. In PhotoImpact, you can paint realistic clouds and simulate their movement by using the Cloud Pen.

Let us give it a try...

You can download sunset sky .jpg or use your own photo.

Then follow the steps below to create your own realistic cloud formations.

To draw realistic clouds:

1. Open your image in PhotoImpact. Click the Paint Tool drop-down arrow in the Toolbox and select Cloud Pen.

2. In the Tool Settings - Brush panel, adjust the size and shape of the brush and other options as shown below. Use a bigger brush tip, decrease Random value, and increase Noise Blend and Density.

3. Set the spacing, fading and painting mode as shown below.

In Cloud painting mode, select Vortex to produce swirling strokes. This will help produce the effect of movement.

4. Select White in Color.

5. Click and drag slowly on the sky to place your cloud formations. Use downward slanting strokes to the right.

This will create clouds that look like they were being blown by high winds.

7. Try experimenting with other settings and strokes to achieve any desired effects. Below is an image from the Easy Pallete. Applying the same settings, you can achieve a fog like mist for the mountainside.
