Selecting the selection method Part 3 -- Selection within Objects

Last time, we got to meet that wonderful tool called Color Range. Today, we'll be working with Selecting within objects. Now, before you rush and look for this feature from the Selection menu, please be informed that Selecting within objects is not a tool, or a command. Rather, it is an enhancement to PhotoImpact's selection capabilities that lets you make selection from parts of objects or multiple objects.

Bear in mind that in previous versions of PhotoImpact, applying a color or effect to an object applies that same color or effect on the entire object. Also, the only way to extract a part of an object is to duplicate the same and erase all areas not needed. With PhotoImpact 8, you can now select areas from objects with relative ease.

  1. Let's open the original selection.ufo. Using the techniques mentioned in part 1 of this tutorial, select the glass and drag it into a new document.

  1. Copy the glass by dragging it into the right side of the document while pressing [Ctrl].

  1. With the second glass active, create a rectangular selection area that covers half of the glass. You can do this by choosing a selection method (in this case we used the Standard Selection Tool). Hold [Alt], then drag the mouse to cover the desired selection area.
