Selecting the selection method Part 1 -- Editable Lasso Selection

I'm an object person. I was never a great fan of making selections. It was hard enough deciding what to select, let alone make one. And no matter how carefully I make my selections, it will inevitably go wrong for a number of reasons: one wrong mouse click, tight borderlines, or blended backgrounds. Fortunately, PhotoImpact has been kind enough to sympathize and do something about us selection-challenged individuals. It came up with three new exciting ways to make selections: Editable Lasso Selection, Color Range, and Selection within Objects.

These new tools are a remarkable improvement over the older selection methods, but they're more powerful and much easier to handle.

Let's take a short tour then, shall we?

First, let's take on the Editable Lasso Selection, which is an improved version of the Lasso Tool. This cool new feature allows you to compensate for earlier inaccuracies when creating a lasso selection and gives enough room for further editing on your selection area.

  1. Open the image file pi8_03_selection.ufo. Make sure that the Lasso Tool is enabled in the Tool Panel.

  1. Using the Lasso Tool, create a selection area based on the whiskey glass edges. You don't have to be precise at this stage, just make some rough selections. In this example, we made a simple 4-sided polygon touching each of the glass's four corners. Notice that instead of a selection area, a green line with magenta nodes at every tip appears when you finish making the selection.
