Using Duplicate Layers to Edit Photos

Step Seven: Save and Merge the Layers

If you plan to continue editing the layers at a later time, you can save the image in .UFO format so that you can open and make further edits to the layers next time.

If you have tweaked the layers the way you want, you can go ahead and merge all the layers into a single image by pressing [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [M] and save it as a JPEG or any other image format.

The image with all layers merged

After you become comfortable using duplicate layers in editing photos, you may find that certain photos require a smaller number of layers, and that others require more. Or perhaps you want to use different Merge Methods for the layers. The beauty of this technique is that you have the flexibility to determine the number of layers and what effects you want to apply, without having to adjust the original image directly. The best way to find out what will work is to experiment with different types of images and try out different Merge Methods and effects on the individual layers.

Step Eight: Add Lip Color

Now that we have merged all the layers, we can continue to edit the photo if necessary. Here, as a final step, we will add color to the lip. Do this by using the Retouch-Saturation tool, which is found on the Tool Panel. On the Attribute Toolbar, enter a brush size appropriate for the part you want to retouch, set the Level to a low value, and select a value for Soft edge. Zoom in on the image, and starting painting over the portion where you want to intensify the color.
