Renaming and Renumbering Your Images

Define your naming criteria

  1. To begin renaming, select Tools: Auto Rename. You can also click on the Browser Toolbar. The Auto Rename dialog box then appears.
  1. Click New to start specifying naming changes that you want to make. This displays the Batch Operation dialog box.

  1. In the Rename tab, you can specify a consistent naming pattern for your files and apply a numbering scheme. You can add characters before or after the name of the file for better sorting capabilities by assigning a Prefix, Suffix, or both.

For example, in New prefix, enter nature trip. Then, enter unedited as the New suffix, assuming that the images are not touched up yet. Keep the numbers in Start with and Step.
  1. Change the Pad value to 3. Padding means adding leading zeroes (wherever necessary) to maintain the same number of digits on numerical characters to ensure proper file sorting. Entering a pad value of 3, for example, sets the sequential numbers in file names to three digits.
  1. Click OK to return to the Auto Rename dialog box.

  1. You will now see a before and after view of the original versus the new file names. You will also see a description of the renaming operation. To make changes, select the description and click Modify.

  1. When you are ready to apply the naming changes, click OK.
