Creating Proxy files

Proxy files are lower resolution working copies of video files. They are reduced in resolution to speed up editing of High-Definition Videos (HDV) and other large video files.

When you edit and preview your project in Instant Play mode, proxy files will be used as substitute for their large video source counterparts. It allows you to render a small portion of your project before you create your final video at the end. Once your video proxy is enabled, proxy files will automatically be created and used in the project whenever you insert video files in the timeline.

To enable creation of proxy files:

  1. Click in the Timeline Toolbar or click Preferences in the File menu.

  2. In the Preferences dialog box, click the Smart Proxy tab.
  3. Select the Enable video proxy option.

Proxy files also have tremendous potential for mobile editing on less powerful laptops and collaborative work across internet and wireless networks. Due to low file sizes, project rendering will take less time to share among machines, allowing more freedom in creative editing.

    Tips:

  • Create proxy when video size is (or above) allows you to set the condition when proxy files will be generated. If the frame size of a video source file is the same or higher than the chosen frame size here, a proxy file will be created for the video file.
  • Click Template to choose a a template with predefined settings.
  • Click Options to tweak detailed settings.
