MediaStudio Pro 7 24p Tutorial

Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.3 now supports 24p footage shot with the Panasonic AG-DVX100 and AG-DVX100A camcorders. It allows you to capture, edit, write back out to DV tape, and output to various formats. The camcorder can shoot several frame rates: 60i, 30p, 24p Standard (2:3 Pulldown) and 24p Advanced (2:3:3:2 Pulldown). It is important to decide on your output requirements before shooting, to determine the most suitable setting for your camera. In the most simple and basic terms:

  • If you are shooting regular video that will be displayed or broadcast as NTSC video, then shoot in the standard 60i setting.
  • If you want to shoot video that will be used to analyze fast movements, where you need to get clear stills of selected frames (sports for instance), shoot in 30p.
  • If you want to output to video but want a "film look" shoot in 24p Standard, (which also does give you the option of later, when you film has won all those awards, doing a 24p extraction and striking a film print.)
  • if you want to shoot in video but do a transfer to film, you should shoot widescreen (preferably with anamorphic lens) and in 24p Advanced.

Bear in mind that the format that the camera outputs through the Firewire is always standard 29.97 NTSC, any pulldown is done by the software during editing.

There are many resources on the web that deals with this camera, one of the most comprehensive and useful ones are here: http://www.adamwilt.com/24p/

Once your footage is in the can, it is time to start capturing, editing and outputting your film.

Capture:

  • Capture your 24p footage (24p Standard or 24p Advanced) onto your hard drive via Firewire in the normal way. Video Capture of MediaStudio Pro simply saves the video in the same format (DV AVI) as it's recorded on the mini-DV tape.

  • If you shoot 24p "Standard" or 24p "Advanced" then the extra six frames (that were added by the camcorder when recording in DV tape are) will be removed after you do capturing via Video Capture.

  • You can use "DV Scan" feature for scanning the whole mini-DV tape of 24p footage, as well as "Batch Capture".
