Creating a DV Tape Content List for Capturing

MediaSudio Pro
enables you to quickly scan individual scenes from the entire contents of DV tapes. After scanning, you can use Video Capture to automatically capture selected scenes directly into the media archive of Video Editor. Using this time saving and convenient function, you can save log-lists of tapes and recapture new selections for future reference.

  1. Connect your DV camcorder to your IEEE 1394 (Firewire) port.
  1. Turn your camcorder on and set it to VCR mode.
  1. Run Video Capture. Select Capture : Scan DV Tape.

  1. From the Reel name panel, type the tape name and description to obtain the correct tape reference.

  1. Select a Scan/ Capture method in the dropdown list.

    • Scan from beginning - Rewinds and then scans the tape from the beginning. This method can be used to scan a newly loaded tape.
    • Scan from current position - This method can be used to scan recently recorded scenes from a previously scanned tape. You can also set the tape where you want to start scanning and use this method to save more time.
    • Scan from beginning and capture - Select this method if you want to scan the whole tape and capture all the scenes.
    • For this tutorial, select either Scan from beginning or Scan from current position.

  1. Select Options.
  2. In the Scan Options panel, select Create index files and Quick scan. Drag the slider towards the right to Level 4. Level 4 scans perform about 10 times the playback speed of your DV camcorder. For example, a 30-minute clip can be scanned in less than 3 minutes.

In the Capture options panel, select Save to Production Library and then select a folder from the Media Library. Doing this allows you to maintain a direct access to the captured clips within your project. Select OK.

NOTE: To add a new folder in the Media Library, launch Video Editor. From the Production Library panel select Media Library, right-click and then select Create. Type a name for the new folder.
  1. In the Scan DV Tape dialog box, select Run. Video Capture will scan and create a thumbnail for every scene from the tape.
  2. If there are incomplete or distorted thumbnails (like the thumbnails below) press [Esc] to stop the scanning, reduce the scanning speed level in Quick scan (Step 6) then scan again.

  1. To combine selected scenes, click . To undo this action, select the combined scene and then click to separate the connected scenes.
  1. Select Save to store the resulting log-list (PSF file format). Use this log-list any time for further capturing of the same tape.
  1. Select the scenes you want to capture then click to start capturing. Selected scenes are highlighted in blue.
