Setting Playback Options for Optimal real-time preview

MediaStudio Pro 7's new feature, software real-time preview in the Video Editor module, allows you to play back up to five layers of video including filters and transitions, in real-time. This tutorial will help you determine how to set the Playback Options for optimal real-time preview.

To set Playback Options for optimal real-time preview:

  1. In the Preview Window, click the Preview Window Menu button and select Playback Options.

  1. In the Playback Options dialog box, set where you want to see the real-time preview of your project by selecting the device from the Playback in drop-down menu.
  1. The Performance Level determines how much processor power is used when you preview your project. Move the slider to a higher value to make the program use more of your processor's power. The faster your processor is, the higher the performance level you should set.

NOTE: The Performance level is linked to the complexity bar that appears in the timeline when you use Instant playback. The complexity bar divides the clips into segments* based on the amount of processor power needed to play back the portion in real-time. If the complexity value of a segment is higher than the specified performance level, Video Editor renders the segment even in Instant playback mode. A lower performance level and a higher complexity value often result in dropped frames.

*Segment refers to a vertical stack in the timeline.

  1. The Audio cache determines how the program will process the audio during playback. Selecting Disable audio cache allows you to hear audio clips clearly especially when there are many audio filters applied.
  1. Multi-threading determines whether the program will process a portion of the project before actual playback starts. Selecting Enable multi-threading can be very helpful for previewing 2-3 second video segments that are loaded with transitions and effects.

NOTE: When there is enough spacing between low-processor usage ("light") and processor-intensive ("heavy") segments, Video Editor will be able to preview light-segments, and also pre-process heavy segments. This gives you the smoothest real-time playback that your system can achieve.
  1. Set the Multi-threading slider to 0 and test the timeline playback performance. If you observe dropped frames (skipped frames), move the slider up incrementally until there are no dropped frames.

Tip: It is recommended to select the multi-threading option even if you just set the multi-threading value to 0.

NOTE: For reliable real-time output to devices, you should have the recommended system configuration for MediaStudio Pro 7. Also make sure you have configured your display card drivers correctly. For detailed descriptions of the settings in the Playback Options dialog box, consult the online help.
