  • The Amazing Picture Machine- http://www.ncrtec.org/picture.htm- Type in specific animal names or type in “animals” and select the animals needed from the list of 352.
  • The Encyclopedia Britannica- http://www.britannica.com/
  • Google- Type in “Antarctic animals” and “Antarctic ecology problems”
  • Google Image Search- Type in “Antarctic animals”

MATERIALS:

  • Materials for various teacher lessons as necessary
  • Ulead’s DVD PictureShow 2, VideoStudio or other VCD/DVD still digital authoring/editing program
  • Print and electronic media books and encyclopedias
  • Storyboard Template forms
  • Paper, Pencils, etc.
  • Computer word processor and Internet access
  • Blank CD’s
  • Scan converter or other projection device for student presentation to the class

PROCEDURES/APPROXIMATE TIMES REQUIRED:

  1. The teacher will show/discuss videos, read stories, or use other print or electronic media to raise student’s awareness of the Antarctic (geography), various animals that live there, how animals adapt to living there, and current or possible ecological dangers to that environment and the animals that live there. (2-3 hours)
  2. The students will be divided into teams of 2 and begin their research. After looking at the database of pictures or at pictures/information from other Internet, print or electronic media the team will select their animal(s). (30-60 minutes)
  3. Student teams will use Internet, print and electronic media resources to gather pictures, and information about their animal, the Antarctic environment, its adap0ttation to the environment, and current or possible ecological hazards to the environment and/or their animals. (3-4 hours)
  4. Student teams will write/edit/review by teacher/rewrite their 200-300 word story using their research and creativity. (2 hours)
  5. Student teams will storyboard their presentation, and incorporate their pictures, and story into a DVD PictureShow 2 presentation utilizing pictures, text, narration and music (optional) functions and author it onto a CD or VCD. (5-6 hours)
  6. Student teams will present their finished lesson to the class and then discuss with the class any comments from other students. (15-20 minutes).
